چکیده

This paper presents an artiicial ecosystem embedded in the real world. The ecosystem hosts diierent robotic species linked together in their search for \food" in form of electrical energy. The paper deals with four species: the so-called \moles", the \competitors", the \mouse", and the \head". The diierences between species are quite substantial. For example the \moles" have simple sensing capabilities whereas the \mouse" is equipped with vision. The \competitors" are a kind of parasite whereas the \head" depends on cooperation. These diierences lead us to the notion of the so-called intelligence in terms of features. We present its relation to self-preservation and what follows is an additional support of the viewpoint that for an animat its environment has to be taken into account.

Economic Aspects of a Real-world Ecosystem Featuring Several Robot Species

We describe an artiicial ecosystem consisting of several robots of diier-ent species. The robots are truly autonomous since they carry secondary batteries that they can recharge themselves. In addition, they are truly heterogeneous since they diier not only in simple factors like size and weight, but also in respect to functionality and complexity. For example, some have very basic sensors, oth...

Dual Space Control of a Deployable Cable Driven Robot: Wave Based Approach

Known for their lower costs and numerous applications, cable robots are an attractive research field in robotic community. However, considering the fact that they require an accurate installation procedure and calibration routine, they have not yet found their true place in real-world applications. This paper aims to propose a new controller strategy that requires no meticulous calibration and ...

Service Robot Control Architectures for Flexible and Robust Real-World Task Execution: Best Practices and Patterns

Successfully building complex service robotic systems that robustly operate in real-world environments gives a lot of insights into what are valuable patterns in architecting such systems. In this paper, we describe some of our insights with respect to robot control architectures and robotics software systems engineering. The focus of the paper is not on discussing specific functionalities but ...

Effective Mechatronic Models and Methods for Implementation an Autonomous Soccer Robot

Omni directional mobile robots have been popularly employed in several applications especially in soccer player robots considered in Robocup competitions. However, Omni directional navigation system, Omni-vision system and solenoid kicking mechanism in such mobile robots have not ever been combined. This situation brings the idea of a robot with no head direction into existence, a comprehensi...

Abundance of common species, not species richness, drives delivery of a real-world ecosystem service.

Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning experiments have established that species richness and composition are both important determinants of ecosystem function in an experimental context. Determining whether this result holds for real-world ecosystem services has remained elusive, however, largely due to the lack of analytical methods appropriate for large-scale, associational data. Here, we use a ...
